Other Headless CMS Options
Other Headless CMS Options
Section titled “Other Headless CMS Options”Beyond Decap, Sveltia, and Tina, several other headless CMS platforms can be integrated with Astro Docus. Each has different strengths, pricing models, and trade-offs. This page provides a brief informational overview of the main alternatives.
CloudCannon
Section titled “CloudCannon”CloudCannon is a managed Git-based CMS with a visual in-context editor designed for non-technical editors. It connects to your Git repository and provides a WYSIWYG editing experience for Markdown, MDX, and static site content .
Key characteristics:
- Git-backed — content remains in your repository
- Visual editing — editors see their changes in context
- Multi-site management — unlimited sites on main plans, popular with agencies
- No free tier — Standard plan starts around $55/month for 3 users
CloudCannon is a strong fit if you manage multiple static sites and want a polished visual editor for clients or marketing teams.
Keystatic
Section titled “Keystatic”Keystatic is an open-source, Git-based CMS built specifically for Astro (and Next.js) by Thinkmill. It stores content directly in your repository as Markdown, YAML, or Markdoc files .
Key characteristics:
- Zero SaaS cost — content lives in your repo, no database or API to pay for
- Astro-native — writes content in Astro’s own formats
- Local and GitHub modes — admin UI runs locally or on your deployed site
- Type-safe schema — defined in plain TypeScript
The trade-offs: no real-time collaboration (editing is single-threaded), images must be committed to the repo (which bloats it over time), and publishing is gated by build time rather than instant . Best for developer-led teams and projects where zero recurring CMS cost matters.
Storyblok
Section titled “Storyblok”Storyblok is an API-first headless CMS with a visual editor and an official Astro integration (@storyblok/astro). It is one of the most mature CMS integrations for Astro .
Key characteristics:
- Visual editing — the editor renders your live Astro site inside the CMS
- Component-based — content blocks map to Astro component islands
- Free to start — pay for features and scale
- Enterprise-ready — ISO 27001 certified, 99.99% uptime SLA
The delta-sync cursor feature enables incremental content fetching with roughly 90% fewer API requests, making it efficient for large sites . Storyblok is best when editor experience is the primary requirement.
Sanity
Section titled “Sanity”Sanity is a hosted headless CMS with a developer-first architecture. The Studio is embedded directly into your Astro project at a route like /studio .
Key characteristics:
- Customisable Studio — built with React, fully extensible
- GROQ query language — for complex relational queries at build time
- Presentation mode — visual editing with live preview
- Free tier — 20 seats, 2 datasets, 10,000 documents, 1M CDN requests/month
Sanity is the most flexible option for teams with complex content models. The trade-off is more setup — non-technical editors need onboarding, and the Studio requires developer time to configure well .
Hygraph
Section titled “Hygraph”Hygraph (formerly GraphCMS) is a GraphQL-native headless CMS with content federation capabilities. It has the cleanest Astro integration footprint — no astro.config changes are required, the loader handles everything .
Key characteristics:
- GraphQL Content API — query and mutate content, assets, and federated sources
- Federated Content Platform — source content from any backend system
- Free Hobby tier — Growth plan at $199/month
Hygraph is best for GraphQL-first teams and projects that need to aggregate content from multiple sources.
Payload CMS
Section titled “Payload CMS”Payload is an open-source, TypeScript-native headless CMS that installs directly into your Next.js app. It is not a hosted service — you self-host it on your own infrastructure .
Key characteristics:
- Code-first — collections defined in TypeScript, types generated automatically
- Database support — MongoDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite
- Local API — query content directly in Server Components with no network hop
- MIT licensed — free core, no public pricing for enterprise features
Payload is best for developer-led teams that want a TypeScript CMS inside their own Next.js app. It is not relevant for static Astro sites — Payload requires a running Node.js server.
Others
Section titled “Others”| CMS | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Prismic | API-based | Official @prismicio/astro, Slice Machine, good for marketing sites |
| Contentful | API-based | REST/GraphQL, global CDN, no official Astro package |
| DatoCMS | API-based | Official @datocms/astro, strong image handling |
| Statamic | API-based | REST/GraphQL, community integration |
Important Note
Section titled “Important Note”All CMS integrations are services, not built-in features of Astro Docus. The template ships with the content structure ready for CMS integration, but the setup requires configuration specific to your chosen platform, repository, and hosting.
